PLACING ALL OUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET
As followers of this site you share in the concern about higher costs for fuel and heating this year. While some would wish away these dramatic impacts on your bottom line as merely the result of a harsh winter or just globalization, we take a very sobering account of what’s eroding affordability for Canadians. The Canadian dollar’s weakness is a symptom of a much larger problem that stems from the Federal Government’s fixation with selling Canadian crude via transcontinental pipelines rather than tending to the growing losses and decline of the manufacturing sector, which once included petroleum products domestically. This latter factor is not lost on Statistics Canada who just last month, stunned market analysts with revelations that Canada’s trade deficit widened, in large part due to the importation of energy – refined energy with real value added, versus the rip and ship export of raw crude. This explains in part the decline of our currency and its direct effect of raising the cost of fuels in Canada as we price all our energy in US terms.
If Canadians feel threatened by increases to their costs of living, loss of jobs, lack of unemployment among our skilled youth, and concern that royalties from oil will continue to decline as other nations are finding their own sources of oil, it may be time to question Ottawa’s wisdom of putting all our eggs in one basket. An economy that was once diversified is flirting with the illusion that our raw resources alone will maintain and protect our standard of living and the cherished programs that have served us well for a generation.
It’s a wake up call Canadians need to heed, if oil- only obsessed Ottawa won’t.
